To Glorify God?

Submitted by Stephen Winters

Ask not how you can serve God. Rather, learn how to live life, how to serve mankind, how to work in such a way as to bless those around you.

"Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen." 1 John 4:20

We've seen from much experience that when people focus on how to "serve God", they end up serving the God of their own imagination. Their mission becomes to build their church or organization, rather than to serve mankind.

Is not God most glorified when we stop trying to "give him glory"? When we try to glorify God we end up trying to glorify the god of our imagination, which is us. We stand before men and say, "give God the glory". But who is in the limelight? Who is it that is in the forefront? US! It is our form, our voice that is standing up front? Is that really how God works?

I say, "Do not try to glorify God!" But just live and love, and serve others, without any thought of trying to serve God, God is pleased. Is God really as self-centered as man has made him out to be? Men have said that God wants us to glorify him. But that would be a self-centered God.

Man's thought about God is a product of man's own imagination. We make our God into our own image. We say that God hates the things that we hate. We say that God is on our side in politics and in religious thinking. We construct God to be like us.
